Online shopping via social media is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet using social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp among others.

Given the convinence of social media shopping, malicious users take this opportunity and pose as genuine sellers with the aim of scaming you over your gulibility.

Here are a few points to look out for when transacting via social media or online:

  • Use trusted websites when undertaking an online transaction.
  • Be sure to read through the terms and conditions and  return policy of the online shop.
  • Look out for business accounts or familiar accounts when undertaking a transaction on social media platforms.
  • Do not pay for goods being sold over any social media platform before physical proof of goods.
  • Do not make payments via wire transfer. If you must use credit/ debit transfer opt for a third party payment option such as Paypal which has also adopted linking your mobile money account that has to be a registered line. This ensures further secured transactions.
  • Be cautious of items being auctioned on social media or online shops  that seem to be too good a deal. Seek advice from friends, family or the applicable authority.
  • Look out for customer feedback on the retailer for both social media and online shops and customer ratings for online shops.
