Online Auctions

In This Issue:

*        Online Auctions

An online auction is a service in which users or participants sell or bid for products or services via the Internet. Virtual auctions facilitate online activities between buyers and sellers in different locations or geographical areas.  Because online auction fraud is one of the most commonly reported types of online fraud, take the necessary precautions to avoid being a victim.

*Do some research about the auction site and how it works, the product and the seller before you start your bid and read their User Agreement and Privacy Policy carefully. Some sites might have hidden fees or do not offer protection against fraud or any other internet security scams.

*Have an effective internet security software on your computer to flag out internet security threats and scams including fake auction sites, phishing attempts, malware-infected browser add-ons and drive-by downloads while browsing the web for bargains.

*In situations where you are contacted by the seller on a product you lost bid for and being offered a second chance but on a different site, it is likely that you might be the target of a phishing scam.

*Take note of the preferred payment method. It is recommended to use a third party payment service, like PayPal, this enables you to make secure payments without revealing your credit card details directly to sellers.

*Always check and take note of the return/refund policy of the seller before you start biding for a product.

*Stay away from wire transfers. Scam artists will come up with a good reason why they're overseas and may ask you to send them the money via wire transfer. That's never a good idea – you have very limited protection in case the deal goes south.

*Avoid giving personally identifiable information on aution sites.

*  Don’t ever purchase anything outside of the registered auction site. It's a big indicator of fraud when a seller says he wants to take the transaction offline. There's no reason why a seller would need to complete the transaction outside any auction site.
